As this space continues to evolve rapidly, UTS provides central guidance and resources to support researchers, Higher Degree Research (HDR) students and research professional staff in using AI responsibly, ethically and in line with university policies, procedures and guidelines.

Have your say in how we use AI for research

UTS eResearch invites researchers, research professional staff and HDR students to complete a short Use of AI survey so they can better understand how AI is being used across the UTS research community.

As the university continues to carefully consider the opportunities and implications of AI, UTS eResearch is seeking the perspectives and input of our research community to help inform our decision-making and the design of our digital support programs at UTS. Whether you are actively using AI, exploring its potential, or not using it at all, your perspective is valuable.

This is a unique opportunity for you to have your say in how the university structures our use of AI.

The 8-10 minute anonymous Use of AI survey is now live and accepting responses until Friday 9th October.

The more responses we receive, the stronger the voice of the research community will be in informing us about what is missing, how we can better support researchers, and which current and future GenAI tools are most valuable for research.

The UTS Use of AI in Research SharePoint site is your central destination for using artificial intelligence in research responsibly, effectively and with confidence. 

Bringing together AI guidelines, policies, training, communities of practice, AI tool guidance, Microsoft Copilot resources, and expert support from across the university, the hub helps researchers, professional staff and HDR students navigate the rapidly evolving AI landscape.

Whether you are exploring AI for the first time or looking to advance your use of AI in research, the hub provides practical resources, training opportunities and trusted guidance to support every stage of the research lifecycle.

The site includes:

  • Policy, Procedures and Guidelines: A consolidated list of all policies and procedures when considering the use of AI, including the Use of AI in Research Guidelines that were developed to assist researchers with AI considerations.
  • AI Communities and Support: Information on AI-related communities across UTS, faculty representatives, and support contacts so you can connect with peers, find training, and get expert assistance on AI in Research from eResearch, the Library, and other teams.
  • Selecting AI Tools for Research: Guidance on how you can choose GenAI tools for your research needs and what you need to be aware of, including considerations around risk, privacy, ethics, and research integrity.
  • Microsoft CoPilot in Research: Practical resources to help you get the most out of CoPilot for your research, including prompt guides, tips and work examples for both the standard and premium versions of CoPilot.

Co-pilot Premium and new data safeguards

As announced by the UTS Vice-Chancellor, Microsoft Copilot Premium is now available to all UTS staff. The Data Analytics and Insights Unit (DAIU) encourages you to take advantage of Copilot Premium and the time-savings it can offer you in assisting with routine administrative or research-related tasks where appropriate. Staff can automatically activate their Copilot Premium licence by submitting this short form. 

The recent addition of a new ‘Confidential - No AI’ document sensitivity label provides an extra safeguard for confidential data when using Copilot at UTS.
