UTS Research Translation Competition

The UTS Research Translation Competition (RTC) provides cash prizes for research teams with a new idea that can be translated into impact. Teams will be selected from their initial proposal to participate in four workshops in June covering IP basics, value propositions, business models, and pitch preparation. They will then participate in a final pitch event in July, where an expert judging panel will select the winning teams.

In 2024, OTB Ventures, a Venture Capital firm specialising in commercialising early-stage deep-tech research, will sponsor the Venture Capital Firms Choice Awards worth $10,000. Additionally, Uniseed, Australia's longest-running venture fund, will offer four hours of mentoring to the winners. Both Venture Capital Firms will have representatives on the RTC judging panel to select the winning teams for the Venture Capital Firms Choice Awards.

Skills developed through the process will help all participating teams with research translation throughout their careers. The winners will benefit from financial support as well as expert guidance from the UTS Research Office. First place will take home a $75,000 cash prize and second place, $25,000 to support their research translation plans.

Application Instructions

Eligibility criteria

  1. The team leader is a current member of staff at UTS.
  2. Team size is two to six people.
  3. The team must disclose/ must have disclosed the relevant intellectual property to the UTS Research Translation Team using the UTS IP Disclosure Form in Research Master.
  4. Projects presented at previous RTCs are not eligible.  
  5. The proposal must be focused on translating research outcomes (not further research) to achieve impact.
  6. UTS must own the relevant intellectual property
  7. UTS must not be restricted in managing the relevant intellectual property and/or research outcomes.
  8. Team members must participate in all four training sessions and the final event.
