Engagement is how you get your research out there to increase your visibility. But where do you start?

Research Impact Facilitator Catherine McElhone suggests you choose engagement activities and tools that match your project goals, resources and stakeholders as you defined in your impact plan.

“Think about your audience and how they engage with information. Being strategic and thinking about how you will use the different types of engagement tools and where you want to go is important.”

Among methods for increasing your external presence are online platforms like LinkedIn and other social media such as YouTube or Bluesky. Catherine suggest you post on LinkedIn once a month, "Make this a habit, even if it’s just reposting or commenting."

Think about your audience and how they engage with information.

The Conversation is another valuable tool for researchers and helps to increase visibility. As an academic-only publication, you can pitch research related articles across four categories: new research, news, opinion or editorial.

The Conversation is a vehicle for media to reuse content because all of its content is creative commons, meaning it is able to be brought to lots of diverse audiences and media platforms,” Catherine said.

Other ways to boost your external presence include:

  • asking the UTS Media team for help in developing communication strategies
  • becoming familiar with UTS Opus, UTS Library’s system for Open Access research publishing
