UTS offers a number of unique internal opportunities to researchers developing their capacity for forward thinking research and innovative partnerships, that challenge the bounds of their discipline.

UTS Disability Access and Inclusion Fund

The UTS Disability Access and Inclusion Fund is an internal initiative developed to support UTS researchers in enhancing the inclusivity and accessibility of their research practices, projects and outputs for people with disabilities.  This funding is available to all UTS researchers and has been created to cover the specific costs of doing research that meaningfully includes and engages the disabled community. The initiative is sponsored by the DVCR and has been developed with the generous support of the UTS Disability Research Network.

UTS Jenny Edwards Research Fellowship

The UTS Jenny Edwards Research Fellowship assists academic researchers with a strong research track record, whose careers have been significantly interrupted or delayed by carer responsibilities, to focus intensively on their research. The Fellowships are named after Professor Jenny Edwards In honour of her pioneering career in computing and IT at UTS and her tireless dedication, commitment and mentorship of others.  While caring responsibilities are most often associated with women, there are also men who carry significant and sustained caring responsibilities. Both men and women who have had periods of significant interruption to their research careers due to caring responsibilities are strongly encouraged to consider applying.

Research Equity Grants: Impact Development Project Funding

The Research Equity Grants were developed to support researchers with carer responsibilities, and to promote gender equity in research at UTS. Impact Development Funding provides financial support of up to $10,000 for project-based research activities designed to enhance a researcher’s career and impact. . This initiative is funded by the DVCR and is managed by the centre for Social Justice and Inclusion (CSJI). For further information, please contact CSJI on 9514-1084 or equity@uts.edu.au.

UTS Collaboration Scheme 

The Collaboration Scheme’s purpose is to enhance opportunities for cross-disciplinary research and collaboration. The scheme will support collaborative projects that may include partnerships between researchers within and outside of UTS leading to future applications for external funding (such as through ARC schemes, Category 2 grants etc.) and/or clearly defined research outputs. The scheme will provide opportunity and support to our researchers across all faculties to undertake innovative multidisciplinary research work.

Distilling Research Impact 

The Distilling Research Impact initiative is an internal scheme for UTS researchers to demonstrate the measurable impact resulting from the adoption of their research. Applicants for this funding will be required to submit a short case study that details the definitive end user impact and the adoption pathway of their research supported by relevant documentation. Successful applicants will be granted in-kind support towards the development of a detailed, evidence-based case study, along with a supporting media story.

UTS Research Translation Competition 

The UTS Research Translation Competition is an innovative pathway for UTS researchers to prove how their own research outcomes have real ability to create meaningful social impact and generate successful business developments. It is an opportunity for UTS Researchers to showcase their ideas, be challenged in translation workshops and realise the capacity for research impact. The winners will benefit from financial support as well as expert guidance from the UTS Research Office. First place will take home a $75,000 cash prize and second place, $25,000 to support their research translation plans.

​UTS Chancellor’s Research (CRF) and Indigenous Research Fellowships

The UTS Chancellor’s Research Fellowship (CRF) (formerly known as the Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Research Fellowship, CPDRF) develops research, teaching and learning, management and communication skills to shape the next generation of academic leaders at UTS. CRF's are awarded to outstanding early career researchers who wish to develop their research, teaching and learning, management and communication skills to become the next generation of academic leaders. 

A part the UTS2027 strategy, UTS also established the Chancellor’s Indigenous Research Fellowship (CIRF) scheme (formerly known as the Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Research Fellowship, CPDIRF). The CIRF scheme will award Fellowships to outstanding early career researchers, who will support our aim to have real impact on society, environment and industry; to benefit the community by being effective and relevant; and deliver practical solutions to current national and international challenges. 

Applications open 8 April 2024 and are due by 11.59pm (AEST) 3 June 2024.

UTS Strategic Research Accelerator (SRA) Program 

This funding program is to help advance strategically significant areas of research on the national and international stage furthering the goals and outcomes of UTS2027. This specialised funding is offered to UTS researchers to fast-track their projects, directly working to push ground-breaking research over the line in hopes of those projects becoming the next big thing. This program will not support initial exploratory or incremental research, or singular appointments to work with an individual academic. UTS is offering support for 2 or 3 full-time postdoctoral researchers to work with a group of UTS academic staff for up to 2 years to create critical mass and accelerate a program of research. Please note that current holders of funding cannot reapply for this program.

Research Equity Grants: Professional Development Equity and Access Funding

The Research Equity Grants were developed to support researchers with carer responsibilities, and to promote gender equity in research at UTS.  Professional Development Equity and Access Funding provides financial support of up to $2,500 to help early to mid-careers researchers. It can help with relevant professional development, participating in mentoring with a senior academic or industry mentor, or travel for conference presentations and symposia. This initiative is funded by the DVCR and is managed by the centre for Social Justice and Inclusion (CSJI). PhD Stipends

Consistent with the UTS approach to HDR training excellence, a centrally-funded HDR stipend may be awarded to a high-quality research project of sufficient scale that provides a unique and valuable HDR training opportunity.

The inclusion of a centrally-funded UTS HDR stipend is therefore not purely a signal of financial UTS support to the project, but primarily as an important UTS contribution to quality HDR training. Learn about UTS PhD Stipends. (This link requires your UTS ID to access).

Publication Fund Application

As a HDR student, you can apply for a reimbursement of up to $5,000 for your open access fees or costs for publishing your work for a single, accepted publication. Access more information. 

Scholarships

Internal 

UTS has a number of scholarships and funding schemes available each year to support domestic and international research students. The schemes include living allowance stipends, tuition fee scholarships, conference funds and equity support grants. Understand what you are eligible for now.

Thesis Completion Support Grant

Formerly known as the Thesis Completion Equity Grant (TCEG), the Thesis Completion Support Grant (TCSG) can provide up to $5,000 funding to help you complete your thesis if you are experiencing financial hardship. 

Vice-Chancellor’s Conference Fund

The Vice Chancellor’s Conference Fund (VCCF) provides financial support for graduate research students to participate in academic conferences. For 2022 , the student support grant is currently available to students looking to participate at both an in-person or online/virtual conference organised locally, nationally or overseas.
