Do you have a new idea that can be translated into research impact?
Join the UTS Research Translation Competition

The Research Translation Competition is now open for applications from researchers across UTS. The winner will receive $75,000, and the runner-up will receive $25,000 to support their research translation projects.
The Competition provides cash prizes for research teams with innovative ideas that can be translated into impact.
Teams will be selected from their initial proposal to participate in four workshops in June 2025 covering IP basics, value propositions, business models and pitch preparation.
They will then participate in a final pitch event in July 2025, where an expert judging panel will select the winning teams for the UTS prizes of $75,000 and $25,000.
“I received invaluable support and guidance throughout the competition,” previous applicant Dr. Xuan Li said. “The experience and knowledge gained during this process will undoubtedly contribute to my personal and professional growth.”
Previous applicant, Dr. Kun Yu praised the competition as an incredible learning experience for his team, despite being unsuccessful.
“We have gained valuable insights into the key aspects of commercialisation. We sincerely appreciate all the help, comments and advice we received from the tutors as they have expanded our knowledge base significantly,” he said.
The funding we secured allowed us to build multiple proof-of-concept demonstrators and proactively secure the industry partnerships that best support our research translation strategy.
Associate Professor David Pigram, the 2024 prize winner, said participating in the Research Translation Competition was immensely rewarding and an amazing opportunity to pitch your ideas and define a vision.
“Participation provided us with exposure to diverse and inspiring research from across UTS and access to excellent IP, pitch and business model training sessions,” he said.
“The funding we secured allowed us to build multiple proof-of-concept demonstrators and proactively secure the industry partnerships that best support our research translation strategy.”
The prize money enabled David’s team to choose its own partners and self-fund a first proof-of-concept for their translation project.
