UTS researchers and professional staff interested in improving their media and social media skills are encouraged to participate in two, in-person training sessions delivered by Australian Science Media Centre on Thursday 21 November 2024.

The morning session will cover how to engage with mainstream media. The afternoon will be dedicated to social media for researchers.
Each 2-hour workshop will be led by the Australian Science Media Centre's Senior Media Officer, Dr Joseph Milton.
Working with mainstream media
Get the most out of your engagements with mainstream media and discover techniques that will help you communicate your research to those outside your field.
This session will discuss how you can be prepared for interviews and ways you can make tricky topics accessible to a broad general audience.
You’ll be reminded why it’s important to use plain English and avoid jargon.
You'll also learn about the news cycle, how and why news stories are structured and how to avoid some of the most common mistakes experts make when telling their stories.

Social media for researchers
With growing numbers of people using platforms like Facebook, X and TikTok to access news, and LinkedIn becoming an increasingly popular professional networking platform, social media can significantly enhance your ability to promote your research and build engagement.
Discover the most important things to think about when talking to the public about your work via social media platforms.
In this session, you’ll be introduced to the benefits and pitfalls of getting social.
You’ll get to know the different platforms, learn how to get started and discover how to build a career-boosting online presence.
