About the program
Girra Maa Indigenous Health invites applications to the Saplings Research Pathways Program, a three-day, in-person gathering held at the University of Technology Sydney from 10- 12 June 2026.
Saplings creates space for reflection, critical thinking, mentoring, and connection. The gathering focuses on relationship-building, shared learning, and supporting participants to develop confidence, connections, and pathways into research and knowledge spaces.
The program is facilitated by Dr Scott Avery and senior academics from Girra Maa Indigenous Health at UTS and aims to bring together people working in Indigenous research, health, disability, evaluation, and wellbeing.
“Saplings creates culturally grounded pathways into Indigenous research, community practice and policy,” Scott said.
The program recognises that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people already hold deep knowledge, leadership and lived experience, and creates space for that knowledge to shape research, community and policy futures.
Saplings creates culturally grounded pathways into Indigenous research, community practice and policy.
The program is shaped by a strong commitment to disability justice, inclusion, and Indigenous-led research.
“Saplings grew from Indigenous disability research and the image of the native daisy, Too often institutions pick the petals off the flower by placing First Nations people into unsupported spaces,” Scott explained. “Saplings was created to nourish the stem, strengthening connection, inclusion and Indigenous knowledge so leadership can grow with community, not away from it.”
The Saplings Gathering brings participants together in a culturally safe, relational learning environment.
Across the three days, participants engage in guided conversations, workshops and storytelling with Indigenous researchers, practitioners and community leaders.
The gathering supports participants to strengthen their understanding of Indigenous research and policy pathways, build relationships and confidence and articulate how their knowledge and experiences can shape future directions.
