All UTS HDR students, professional staff and researchers are encouraged to share their impact in a Discovery Profile.

“The impact summary section in your Discovery Profile is an important tool for communicating your impact,” said Research Impact Facilitator Catherine McElhone. “Your impact summary is not based on individual projects, but your whole career with a specific focus on impact. You can also create Symplectic Records of Impact and capture research engagement activities and impact claims.”

Tips for optimising Discovery Profiles

  • Biography – don’t start with your PhD. Start with where you are now and have your PhD listed at the end of your Profile
  • Groups – increase the visibility of UTS networks by including what groups you belong to
  • Media – add media such as engaging YouTube videos and other media appearances
  • Links – link to other profiles such as LinkedIn or professional networks
  • Availability – add availability tags e.g. open to supervision, collaboration and mentorship etc.

A benefit of having a complete profile is that it utilises the whole university’s search engine optimisation.

“A benefit of having a complete profile is that it utilises the whole university’s search engine optimisation. The university is a trusted source for Google and therefore pushes your profile higher,” Catherine said.

By optimising your Profile, you can increase your external presence and highlight your impact at the same time. Once you have a completed Impact Summary for your profile, you can then use it for other purposes such as applying for grants or engaging with industry partners.
