Why you should apply
We asked past and current Fellows to share their experiences after being awarded a UTS Chancellor’s Research Fellowship.
“I can attest to the amazing opportunity this is,” said past Chancellor’s Research Fellow in the Faculty of Law, Laura Smith-Khan, “Having the time and funding to dedicate to leading my own research project, regular teaching to continue to develop this part of my practice, and the opportunity (and funding) to spend time overseas as a visiting scholar - all these opportunities have been career changing.”
During her fellowship, Laura also received the highly prestigious Max Crawford Medal, demonstrating the real-world impact of her research on teaching and learning, as well government policy reviews.
“I highly encourage interested parties to consider applying,” she said.
Chancellor’s Research Fellow at the School of Life Sciences, Dr Zoe Xirocostas said becoming a Chancellor’s Research Fellow gave her the tools and funding to establish her own lab and propel her research trajectory.
“Engaging with other fellows and the wider UTS community has led to new and exciting collaborative opportunities,” she said.
ARC Future Fellow leading the Microbial Super-Resolution Microscopy Lab at the Australian Institute for Microbiology and Infection, Dr Bill Soderstrom said that his Fellowship experience launched his independent academic career.
“Since receiving this award, I have secured national competitive funding such as an Australian Research Council grant and other fellowships that likely would have been out of reach without the UTS Chancellor’s Research Fellowship.”
As part of his UTS Chancellor's Indigenous Research Fellowship, Dr Allan Teale is collaborating with the Kamilaroi community in Moree to create a seniors’ retirement living facility to house Indigenous Elders.
“My Chancellor's Indigenous Research Fellowship project is based on the development of a housing master plan, and I will be working closely with Indigenous communities, my colleague, Industry PhD candidate Giles Gunesekera, and interested businesses such as TransGrid and the National Australia Bank,” Allan said.
Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) Prof Anika Gauja added, “This is an incredible opportunity for early career researchers to join a vibrant and highly engaged research community at UTS.”
“We leverage the outstanding quality of our disciplines to work collaboratively across the university and outside of it - with industry, government and communities - to address real-world problems. It’s a wonderful team to be a part of.”
