Are you interested in pursuing international partnerships? Do you want to achieve research impact on an international scale by securing international funding for your research project?
How to develop an international research strategy
To realise our vision to be a leading public university of technology recognised for our global impact, international engagement is a critical part of what we do at UTS. RES Hub has developed a feature series on how to build international research collaboration.
As part of our Building an International Research Strategy series, UTS researchers and Research Office teams offer practical suggestions that will help you start forming successful and influential international partnerships and increase your chances of international grant success.
Successful international research doesn’t happen by chance. It grows from strong partnerships, strategic planning and knowing where the opportunities are.
Expand your research in the global arena by considering practical suggestions from UTS researchers and research support staff that will help you create a roadmap for success in the international grants landscape.
International Research Grants Manager Maggie Wang said, “Successful international research doesn’t happen by chance. It grows from strong partnerships, strategic planning and knowing where the opportunities are. At UTS, we’re here to help researchers find the right global pathways and turn great ideas into funded projects.”

Explore case studies from researchers such as award-winning marine biologist Associate Professor Emma Camp and ARC Future Fellow Dr Bill Söderström who share their insights into building successful international partnerships and securing international funding opportunities.
In sharing advice on successful grant application strategies, Emma says funders look favourably on previous buy in from other funders and when you have a bigger vision for a project. She also advises delivering projects in stages can be a successful funding strategy.
“Breaking down our long-term vision into smaller pieces that funders can get behind is a strategy that has worked for us in the constraints of the funding mechanisms available,” Emma said.
When building international collaborations, Bill recommends going to conferences and networking.
“Pop out of your (shy?) research shell and be open to explore what’s out there,” he said.
